Modern Student: "Where am I LIVING?"

Student Living Advice:

When thinking about moving away from home to begin student life, it can be tricky figuring out what is right for you. Costs, distance, feelings about moving, friends etc... These are all things you have to think about before making decisions about student accommodation.

The issue with giving advice on topics such as this is that it really depends on the individuals circumstances. However If you are someone who has the ability to move away from home and wants to live in student accommodation. Here is my advice:

  • Distance - consider the distance you need to travel to Uni, if its far or in a different country then obviously student accommodation is the route you need to go down. On the other hand if you live relatively close to your Uni then it may be wise consider travelling options.

  • Self Analysis - try to be honest with yourself, are you prepared to be independent and live by yourself? If not perhaps its better to live at home or even leave it for another year and see how you feel.

  • Which Accommodation? - Research is key. Make sure the accommodation you choose is practical and suitable for your needs. You don't want to get stuck in a contract in accommodation that doesn't work for you.

  • Timing - Know what you want to do well in advance of starting your first year at Uni. Accommodation gets taken up fast, especially for first years. Have a plan and be ready to apply. P.S. if you decide last minute you want to live in student accommodation and its full, its not the end of the world, just keep looking for empty spaces and you'll eventually find a spot. Plus there is always next year.
